For her debut appearance on Hope Street, Bar Avni presents the enchanting and stately Symphony No.3 by Tchaikovsky alongside two keystones of a true ‘American’ sound. Drawing on Shaker melodies, a frontier spirit, and what Copland called a “high lonesome” mood, Appalachian Spring is the essence of classical Americana. A similar fusion shapes Florence Price’s Piano Concerto, which brings together European Romanticism with African American spirituals, and provides Jeneba Kanneh-Mason with her debut with the Orchestra.
