This concert explores music's rich dialogue with other art forms. Language fascinates American prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, and her work Three Essays considers the power of words to inform, mislead and enrich. Eleventh Rushworth Composition Prize winner Rob Hughes turns to pop, jazz, rock and electronica to inspire his music, while Gabriela Ortiz’s Six Pieces for Violeta is an atmospheric and haunting tribute to the Chilean composer, folklorist and ethnomusicologist Violeta Parra. Colourful Latino folk textures also flow through Ligereza by Chilean composer Miguel Farías and the vibrant Sinfonietta by Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra.
