Robert Gerhard’s “New York” Symphony No. 4 captures the vibrancy and complexity of the U.S. city through an innovative orchestral style full of contrasts. The work combines vibrant rhythms, surprising textures and introspective moments that draw on silence to depict an urban landscape. The symphony reflects this Catalan composer’s fascination with metropolitan life while establishing him as one of the most significant creators of the 20th century – a figure that L’Auditori is celebrating this year.
The programme will be rounded out by a work where the very title expresses a certain familiarity: Richard Strauss’s Symponia domestica offers a delicate and detailed portrait of everyday life – inspired by episodes from his life, not by heroes or legendary beings – that combines humour, lyricism and subtle dramatic tensions. Each movement of this symphonic poem is nourished by Strauss’s extraordinary capacity to turn simple situations into rich musical images, showing the balance between intimacy and theatricality that is one of the hallmarks of his work.
