When the tango enters a concert hall, it packs a theatrical punch. The Barcelona Symphonic Band presents an evening to celebrate Astor Piazzolla’s universe, with music that exudes passion, nostalgia and urban energy. This especially vibrant programme will start with Gerardo Di Giusto’s Malambo Grosso, followed by Piazzolla’s iconic Libertango. The suite from the Estancia ballet by fellow Argentine Alberto Ginastera will elevate folkloric rhythms through the orchestra’s virtuosity.
The culminating moment, however, will come with María de Buenos Aires, a singular work that transforms tango into narrative. Spanning lyricism, irony and darkness, Piazzolla conjures a soundscape in which the city becomes the protagonist and this popular dance a captivating stage experience. Under the baton of José R. Pascual-Vilaplana, the concert will bring together soloists Mercedes Gancedo (soprano), Gustavo de Gennaro (tenor) and bandoneón player Marcelo Mercadante—three performers who lend authenticity to this musical journey through Buenos Aires.
