Three ways to praise God with gratitude, once again led by Jordi Savall, the Capella Nacional de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations. Michel Richard Delalande’s Te Deum is a solemn French Baroque piece written for choirs, soloists and orchestra. Majesty, rhythmic brilliance and a richness of sound traverse this score from start to end, complemented by Georg Friedrich Händel’s Te Deum, written in 1713 on the occasion of the Peace of Utrecht, which brought an end to the War of the Spanish Succession (though the fall of Barcelona to the Castilian and French armies of Philip d’Anjou would come a year later, in 1714 ). The extravagant brilliance of the work contrasts with the more subdued nature of the Te Deum by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, written in 1993 with traces of a recognisable contemplative minimalism.
