To hear Philippe Jaroussky is to be transported to the Italy of the early 18th-century castrati. A voice could hardly sound higher or more pure. This time, the beloved countertenor takes you back to that thrilling era with Antonio Vivaldi’s magnificent Stabat Mater, the cherished Nisi Dominus, and the composer’s signature opera arias. Together with his own Ensemble Artaserse, Jaroussky transforms the Muziekgebouw into the sultry Venice of the glory days of the Italian Baroque.
Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater is arguably his most famous and most beautiful vocal work. His setting of the hymn about the Virgin Mary’s sorrow at the foot of Christ’s cross, leaves no listener unmoved. In his 2014 recording with this ensemble, Jaroussky demonstrated what OpusKlassiek called ‘pure vocal beauty combined with great interpretive insight’, proving once again that he truly is in a class of his own.
