In addition to being a guitarist with world-famous rock band The National, Bryce Dessner is a highly sought-after composer for film, ensembles and orchestras. The versatile Ragazze Quartet pays tribute to this multi-talented artist and his music, alongside works by fellow composers Caroline Shaw, Aart Strootman, and a new piece by Calliope Tsoupaki.
Calliope Tsoupaki held the title of Composer Laureate of the Netherlands from 2018 to 2021. For her new piano quintet, Poem for an empty world, she drew inspiration from the sea – an ever-present force in her homeland of Greece. Migration is a central theme in Dessner’s work: Aheym (‘homeward’) is inspired by his grandmother’s stories of her journey to America and refers to his roots in the Jewish communities of Poland and Russia. Little Blue Something is based on Czech folk music, while Tenebre unfolds like a purifying journey toward the light.
