Polarisation is nothing new. But what role can art play in navigating our confusing world? Cello Octet Amsterdam joins forces with Brazilian choreographer Samir Calixto and the dynamic German dance company Of Curious Nature. DESCENT x ASCENT is a multidisciplinary performance centred around the spellbinding music of Pēteris Vasks. In his work, Vasks reflects on the opposing forces that govern our world. Yet, no matter how dark things get, his music remains a source of hope and comfort.
The Cello Octet, a regular fixture at the Muziekgebouw, loves to cross musical borders. They find a kindred spirit in Samir Calixto, whose engaged performances always push for a wider lens. The choreographer and the octet proved they were a perfect match back in 2018 with their successful collaboration Summa, a performance about the longing for comfort and stillness, set to the music of Arvo Pärt. With Vasks, the creators once again turn to a Baltic composer whose work is meditative in nature, with long lines and lyrical melodies.
