Praised by Gramophone as an ‘overlooked masterpiece’ that ‘remind us that we’re not alone in our wonder and love and suffering’, Lili Boulanger’s Clairières dans le ciel is among the most moving gems of the French song repertoire. Soprano Katharine Dain and pianist Sam Armstrong recorded it for their internationally acclaimed album Forget This Night. On the eve of International Women’s Day, they bring the complete cycle to the Muziekgebouw, complemented by works by other brilliant women. A beautiful tribute to Lili Boulanger.
Katharine Dain is one of the Muziekgebouw’s most cherished frequent performers. The American, who lives in the Netherlands, has enjoyed international acclaim for several years now. As Gramophone put it: ‘Dain’s soprano has a slender, pure quality, fearless at altitude’. She has even earned praise in France for her ‘impressive mastery of the French mélodie’. Dain and Armstrong won an Edison Award for their debut album, Regards sur l’Infini.
