Three titans of American minimalism are celebrating milestone birthdays this season: Philip Glass and Steve Reich are turning 90, and John Adams is turning 80. Pianist Ralph van Raat, a connoisseur of their work, has put together a wonderfully varied festive programme. He will perform solo works by Glass and Reich, and violinist Rosanne Philippens will join him for Adams’ duo Road Movies. Soprano Laura Bohn also takes the stage, performing several arias from the operas that served as Adams’ major breakthroughs.
Piano Counterpoint is an arrangement of Reich’s Six Pianos and features five pre-recorded piano parts. In other words, you get to hear six Ralphs at the same time. The Etudes are among Glass’s most beloved works. Less radical than his early pieces, they are lyrical and often even romantic in sound. Adams’ Road Movies explores the pleasures of a quintessential American pastime: driving across long, empty roads. It has been twenty years since Ralph van Raat recorded Adams’ complete piano works.
