The 99-year-old conducting legend, the Oslo Philharmonic's Honorary Conductor Herbert Blomstedt, returns to Oslo with two of late Romanticism's most moving symphonies. Brahms called his Second Symphony one of the saddest things he had ever written, but is it really? And what do you do with a symphony that ends in desperate darkness rather than triumphant jubilation?
Herbert Blomstedt has conducted Brahms's symphonies for more than six decades. Now, at the age of 99, he returns to the Oslo Philharmonic with two of them. Blomstedt has performed these works throughout his entire life, and each time he discovers something new in them.
