My Heart Be Brave brings together Chineke! Voices and Chineke! Chamber Ensemble for a powerful programme of spirituals, freedom songs and contemporary choral works.
My Heart Be Brave marks the first performance by Chineke! at Kings Place as part of the orchestra’s 2027 series. Bringing together Chineke! Voices and Chineke! Chamber Ensemble, the programme reflects on loss, resilience and the enduring pursuit of justice through spirituals, freedom songs and contemporary choral works.
At its heart is Joel Thompson’s acclaimed Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, a powerful seven-movement work that sets the final words of unarmed Black men before they were killed. First performed in 2015, the piece has become one of the most significant choral works of recent years, confronting audiences with profound humanity and compassion.
Alongside Thompson’s work are Florence Price’s Resignation, Jessie Montgomery’s I Want to Go Home from Five Freedom Songs, Michael Tippett’s arrangement of Deep River from A Child of Our Time and Moses Hogan’s beloved setting of My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord. The programme concludes with Marques L.A. Garrett’s uplifting My Heart Be Brave and Ken Burton’s A Prayer, offering a powerful message of courage, hope and solidarity.
Price: £20-£30
