What does love sound like? What about hope? Light-filled, as in Johannes Brahms' work, or passionate, as in Sergei Rachmaninoff's? Rachmaninoff poured his longing for his homeland into heart-rending sounds even before he had left it for good. Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto, on the other hand, has been shining like sonorous sunshine in the firmament of the music heaven for almost 150 years: full of power and impulsive upswings – a masterpiece tailor-made for Spanish violinist María Dueñas. Elim Chan, one of the most impressive conductors of her generation, leads the European Union Youth Orchestra through this programme between light and shadow with tonal precision and narrative power.
