OMEGA only sold 50.000 copies when it appeared in 1996. Before securing a loyal following of fans, the artistic partnership between Enrique Morente and Lagartija Nick took its time to find a record label which would dare to edit this rupture with flamenco standards. Today, these seem natural. Back then the established tradition considered it “an assassination of the flamenco song”. 30 years on, the combination of cante jondo, electric rock and poetry are all part of the norm. It’s not been domesticated: what happened is that the true art wins out.
Kiki Morente was just a boy when OMEGA changed everything, but he remembers the significance his father gave it. Now he has reissued that connection with Omega 30ª Aniversario. This show revisits the original and adds songs that were discarded then, with the one and only Federico as master of ceremonies and the choreographies of Israel Galván, who Enrique Morente called “the eldest of the young dancers”. If you have not lived OMEGA, do not wait another 30 years.
