Maybe it’s the melodies, maybe it’s the style – but there’s definitely a certain je ne sais quoi about French music. Guest conductor Gilbert Varga serves up a gourmet menu tonight: feather-light soufflés from Franck and Ravel, pure romance from Fauré, Saint-Saëns and the wonderful cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, and to finish, Ravel’s dizzying, delirious waltz to end all waltzes. It’s mouth-watering stuff – so go on, indulge yourself!

Gilbert Varga (Conductor)

Gilbert Varga, son of the celebrated Hungarian violinist Tibor Varga, studied under three very different and distinctive maestros: Franco Ferrara, Sergiu Celibidache and Charles Bruck. A commanding and authoritative figure on the podium, Varga is renowned for his elegant baton technique, and has held positions with and guest-conducted many of the major orchestras across the world.

Daniel Müller-Schott

Daniel Müller-Schott ranks among the world’s best cellists of his generation and can be heard on all of the foremost international concert stages. With an outstanding debut at the Berliner Philharmoniker Daniel Müller-Schott has started the New Year 2014. Under the conducting of Alan Gilbert he performed Antonín Dvorák‘s Cello Concerto. The concert can be seen on the Digital Concert Hall of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
