A cor anglais lends its plangent voice to Sibelius’ mythical bird, while the oboe, rather than the violin, has the theme in the gorgeous slow movement of Brahms’ evergreen concerto. Its Hungarian-inspired third movement makes for the perfect transition to Bartók’s orchestral fireworks – a fitting close for this welcome return of the CBSO under their much-lauded new Music Director.
