Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony has long been an audience favourite, with its pitch perfect balance of long-breathed melodies and orchestral drama more than meriting its nickname “The Romantic.” Throughout the work, it is that most evocative and romantic of instruments, the horn, which serves as protagonist and narrator, and so it is with the other works on the programme. Britain’s exciting young superstar of the instrument, Ben Goldscheider, joins the ESO for Strauss’s Everest of horn concertos, and the programme opens with the magical horn quartet which sets the scene for Humperdink’s operatic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel.
