In 1773, the travelling scholar Charles Burney noted in his diary that »the Bohemians are the most musical of all nations«. Our typically warm orchestra sound is deeply rooted in this tradition, and we always enjoy celebrating this with passionate enthusiasm. Our chief conductor has once again put together an exciting programme from his homeland: it takes us right into the second act of Janáček’s stirring national opera Jenůfa, which premiered in Brno in 1904. It is all about life in the countryside and the moral values and social constraints that exist there, putting enormous pressure on a young woman – even to the point that her illegitimate child must die. This grandiose masterpiece is filled with folk music, dramatic moments and an incredible intensity of emotion. But before we explore these psychological extremes of human existence, we will present a fantastic flute concerto. It was written by the Prague composer Jindřich Feld, who died in 2007; the concerto is entirely committed to the Czech musical idiom. Feld composed it in 1954 for a wonderful orchestral ensemble including piano, harp and a whole host of percussion instruments, which allows us to really let loose on stage. The most complex leading role in this special piece is played by our solo flutist Daniela Koch, who was once praised by a critic: »What she brings to the ear conveys not only great joy in music-making and technical mastery of her instrument, pure intonation, virtuoso runs and stylistic flexibility, but also an individual approach to the works.«

Tickets: from 25.08.2025 10 a.m.
