Rimma Sushanskaya continues her symphonic series, offering an evening of soaring romanticism, featuring beloved works by Smetana, Bruch and Rachmaninov.
The programme begins with Bedřich Smetana’s vivid tone poem, Vltava (The Moldau), which traces the river’s journey from its source to its powerful climax in Prague.
The journey continues with Max Bruch’s lyrical Violin Concerto No. 1, celebrated for its dramatic expression and rich melodies, performed by the acclaimed soloist Coco Tomita.
The evening concludes with Sergei Rachmaninov’s glorious Second Symphony. This titanic symphony is a musical monument to love and loss, defined by its sumptuous melodies, expansive sound, and profound emotional depth. The symphony’s sheer scale is an immersive and unforgettable experience.
About the Soloist
Japanese violinist Coco Tomita first came to prominence after winning the BBC Young Musician 2020 Strings Category. Her debut album Origins (Orchid Classics) received outstanding reviews from The Strad, Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine and The Guardian, and was chosen as Apple’s “Disc of the Month” in April 2022. The recording has since earned more than 5.5 million streams, and her second album, Echoes, was released in 2024.
Coco performs widely across the UK with pianist Simon Callaghan, with recent debuts including Saffron Hall, Bechstein Hall, Harrogate International Festival, St George’s Bristol and Dubai Opera. She has appeared as a soloist with the Nagoya Philharmonic, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Philharmonie Baden-Baden. She studies with Kolja Blacher in Berlin.
