For the season finale, we have brought together two of the 20th century's most distinctive orchestral works, both written by composers who defied convention. Ligeti's violin concerto from 1992 blends Romanian folk music with electronic experimentation, while Strauss's An Alpine Symphony from 1915 requires 125 musicians to recreate a day's hike in the German Alps. François-Xavier Roth conducts and Carolin Widmann is the soloist.

In the season finale, you will hear two pieces that could hardly be more different. One is a wild ride through violin sonorities that breaks with everything you thought you knew about what a violin concerto can be. The other takes you on an 11-hour mountain hike told in under an hour, with an orchestra that fills the entire stage and music that paints pictures of sunrise, thunderstorms, and triumphant mountain peaks.
