“This is the best of me,” declared Edward Elgar on the score of The Dream of Gerontius – and this heart-rending vision of a lonely soul’s journey towards eternity might just be the greatest piece of British music ever written. Forget everything you thought you knew about Elgar – just make sure you hear it.
