Mahler’s First Symphony proceeds from a magical, hushed opening, via a folk-dance second movement and strange, disconcerting funeral march, to a jubilant finale, and shows the 24 years old composer excitedly extending the range of orchestral expression. First though, Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto shows the young composer breaking away from Mozart’s model into his own world of emotion, with a tender slow movement and mischievous and sprightly finale performed by superlative pianist David Fray.
