Dutch National Ballet associate artist David Dawson is one of the most-sought after choreographers today. This season includes two works by this British artist: the world première of Requiem and his recent hit Citizen Nowhere.

Dawson’s Requiem is a monumental new work to mark the centennial of the end of the First World War in 2018: ‘A war that was utterly senseless and cost millions of lives’. He injects it with modern relevance, asking ‘How far have we come, and what have we learned from the lessons of history?’ His Requiem is not only a lament for the many lives lost, but a plea to consider what kind of world we are leaving behind for future generations. There is also cause for optimism, however, for ‘The human spirit is a beautiful thing, only it all too often gets trapped in a thirst for power, in injustice and pain’.

Gavin Bryars’ Requiem
For this world première, renowned British composer Gavin Bryars wrote a new Requiem for orchestra, chorus and vocal soloists. He and Dawson studied the impact and structure of earlier requiems for this new composition, but ultimately it, like the choreography, is a product of their own life experiences and personal vision.

The second half of this double bill is Citizen Nowhere, which was a tremendous success when it premièred at Dutch National Ballet in 2017. The source for this solo piece was Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s Le Petit Prince, but Dawson and composer Szymon Brzóska were also deeply influenced by current events during its creation. ‘The little prince’ stands for many things, such as the solitary, stateless refugee. Dancer Edo Wijnen was nominated for a Dutch Zwaan award for most impressive dance performance for his role in Citizen Nowhere.
