A symbolic work in Verdi’s repertoire, Nabucco returns to the Sferisterio in Macerata after more than ten years of absence, bringing back to the stage one of the most powerful and choral pieces in the history of opera.
At the heart of the story is an oppressed people who find their voice in choral singing, a choir that becomes the protagonist and bearer of a universal feeling of identity, belonging and freedom.
Alongside the choral dimension, the opera intertwines public and private destinies, staging the conflict between power, faith and family ties, leading to the transformation of the king Nabucco.
With the new production by Belgian director Paul-Émile Fourny and conducted by Fabrizio Maria Carminati, Anastasia Bartoli, one of today’s most sought-after dramatic voices, makes her debut on the stage of the Sferisterio in the challenging role of Abigaille.
Joining her, also for the first time at the Macerata Opera Festival, is this year’s young baritone revelation Ariun Ganbaatar in the role of Nabucco. Laura Verrecchia plays Fenena, Alessandro Scotto di Luzio plays Ismaele, and bass Alberto Comes, making his debut in the role of Zaccaria, completes the cast.
