Robert Gerhard’s Concertino for String Orchestra, created between 1927 and 1928, is known for its transparent and dynamic take on classical forms, while also reflecting the influence of atonality. This refined balance hints at the future voice of one of Catalonia’s most notable composers.

Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, written during his creative youth – in fact, chronologically, it is the first piece he composed – places the piano at the heart of an eminently lyrical narrative that seems to spring from the soul. Jan Lisiecki will take on a solo part that alternates between poetic introspection and virtuoso brilliance, while the orchestra serves as an ideal framework for conveying this intimate truth.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which Wagner described as the “apotheosis of dance”, will close out the programme. Renowned for its almost obsessive rhythmic nature – also in a sombre key, as evidenced by the allegretto’s ostinato –, the symphony will reach a finale of Dionysian exaltation.
