Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen, who exhibits a natural authority and charismatic flair on the podium, opens the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s concert with Stravinsky’s witty Danses concertantes, one of the composer’s most vibrant neoclassical creations. Next up is Hummel’s agile and lyrical Trumpet Concerto, a real showcase for “trumpeter extraordinaire” (BBC Music Magazine) Matilda Lloyd. After the interval, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony brings the evening to a thrilling close. Performed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, this joyful symphony reminds us why his music continues to inspire and unite audiences today.
