Prepare for a night of orchestral spectacle reminiscent of Hollywood’s golden era as part of our Friends Gala, as Korean violin sensation Bomsori brings Korngold’s electrifying Violin Concerto to life. Overflowing with sweeping and lush melodies based on themes that Korngold had written for the silver screen, the piece, which premiered in 1947, was famously dedicated to Alma Mahler, widow of Gustav Mahler and longtime friend of Korngold. Today, it is widely considered one of the most beloved romantic violin concertos by violinists and audiences alike.
The evening opens with Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a playful, magical ride full of sparks and chaos (later used in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia) and culminates in Strauss’s monumental Also sprach Zarathustra, the towering, awe-inspiring work forever linked to the 1968 epic science fiction film 2001:A Space Odyssey.
From first note to last, Alexander Shelley leads National Symphony Orchestra Ireland in a rich and popular programme of orchestral colour and drama sure to delight.
