Festival Strings Lucerne demonstrates what a string orchestra can achieve: transparent, agile, and rich in tonal colour, with precision and playfulness that a larger orchestra can only dream of. Under the spirited direction of Daniel Dodds, the ensemble moves seamlessly through historical masterpieces and modern compositions, energetic, refined, and musically vibrant.
The programme nods to Joseph Haydn, father of the string quartet and an inspiration for the modern string ensemble. Ravel’s Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn honours this tradition, while Helena Winkelman’s Papa Haydn’s Parrot brings classical ideas to life with playful inventiveness.
With Midori, a world-class violinist, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto gains virtuosity, warmth, and poetic flair. From Ravel to Winkelman and Beethoven: the orchestra performs with sharpness, imagination, and a lively interplay between classical and modern. A concert that showcases the string orchestra at its most thrilling.
