»When spring arrives, the heart leaps with joy«. True to this saying, we are delighted to bring magical sounds and folklore together just before the start of this season. Together with guest conductor Krzysztof Urbański and the powerful violin playing of Nemanja Radulović, we will also be spreading lots of energy and musical joys in refreshing interpretations of works that all relate to this lively time of year. Tchaikovsky’s popular violin concerto, with its catchy themes, is certainly a virtuoso rollercoaster ride, yet it is also one of the more light-hearted pieces by this otherwise often melancholic composer. After a crisis, he was just finding new courage to embrace life, as he confessed in March 1878: »In such a state of mind, creativity completely loses the character of work; it is pure bliss!« We are also looking forward to the striking introduction to this masterpiece: the work »Maslenitsa«, premiered in 2012 and written by Guillaume Connesson – a colourful and folkloric homage to the traditional Russian spring festival, when the cold winter is chased away with boisterous celebrations. We round off the colourful festivities with Mieczysław Weinberg’s Third Symphony, interspersed with Polish and Belarusian folk songs: music that is at times shaken by eruptions, but nevertheless largely optimistic, extremely colourful, occasionally playful and lyrically dreamy. It was originally composed in March 1949, but was not performed until the spring of 1960 in a revised version – and will surely thrill not only us, but hopefully our audiences as well.
