Let us imagine the ageing Vivaldi in Vienna, the city the Venice-born composer moved to shortly before his death: far away from the big stage, writing for salons and chambers. The ensemble Proxima D, which debuted at the MusikTheater an der Wien in 2024 with the production Combattimenti, performs lute concertos and trio sonatas by the “Prete rosso”: intimate chamber pieces typical of the Viennese style favoured by Vivaldi in his later years.
