Shortly after its rather respectful and pious opening, Mendelssohn’s ‘Reformation’ Symphony suddenly explodes into a democratic declaration of faith and equality – two ideals the composer held so dear, and it shows. Anton Bruckner wanted similar sincerity from his Requiem, and cast it in the same grave D minor key as Mozart’s, creating an austere and deeply moving setting of an immortal text.
