"Each time, the mystery remains" - Benjamin Britten

1992, 2002, 2022… Sir Antonio Pappano was the Music Director of La Monnaie from 1992 to 2002: ten wonderful years of fruitful collaboration with our orchestra, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2022. The perfect occasion to invite the illustrious pianist and conductor to make his grand return to Brussels. He will be joined by the tenor Ian Bostridge, who has impressed audiences at La Monnaie with his performances as Gustav von Aschenbach in Britten’s Death in Venice in 2009 and in four recitals. Together, the two men will take on one of the most moving cycles in the entire history of music: Schubert’s Winterreise. This cycle, in which singer and accompanist are well-matched, is one of the masterpieces of the German lied: a sober journey full of intensely intimate anguish and a profound reflection on loneliness.
