The Academy of Ancient Music presents a joyous concert version of Purcell’s fantastical music-drama The Fairy Queen.
’One charming night / Gives more delight / Than a hundred lucky days…’ This is A Midsummer Night’s Dream but not as you know it, as for one night only Richard Egarr brings Purcell’s delightful ’semi-opera‘ to life on the Barbican stage.
The Academy of Ancient Music’s Monteverdi series at the Barbican was described as “wonderfully free-form” by The Arts Desk. Now the same team turns all its fantasy and theatricality to Purcell’s very English genius. Imaginatively semi-staged and with a cast that includes Timothy West, Sarah Tynan and Iestyn Davies, expect Egarr and his team to work some real enchantment.
