Based on Shakespeare's comic play, RCM alumnus Benjamin Britten’s much-loved opera A Midsummer Night's Dream has enchanted audiences since its first performance at the Aldeburgh Festival over 50 years ago.
Set in the woods around Athens, the King of the Fairies Oberon has fallen out with his Queen, Tytania. While the Rustics (craftsmen) rehearse for a play, Oberon interferes in the disputes of four lovers with a troublesome love potion and the acrobat Puck makes mischief, but all is reconciled at the wedding of Theseus, the Duke of Athens.
From the ethereal woodland scenes to the amusing antics of the Rustics, Britten's orchestration brilliantly portrays each dream-like scene with distinctive musical signatures.
