Since OHP last produced Adriana Lecouvreur in 2002, Cilea's sumptuously gorgeous opera has become something of a populist piece, being given at the Royal Opera House among others. Coming firmly from the verismo repertoire for which OHP has become renowned, Adriana is a romantic drama of quite exquisite beauty, a tragedy of love, betrayal and murder.
Adriana is a famous actress, in love with Maurizio, a soldier in the service of the Count of Saxony - but he is not who he says he is. Adriana fails to recognise the deep affection that Michonnet, her stage manager, has for her and deceit leads to betrayal and death, played out against a wonderful score and the deeply touching backdrop of Michonnet's dignified but unrequited love.
