With consistent musical brilliance, this grand, expressive score makes Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk a masterpiece of the 20th century; a mixture of tragic force and satire, full-blooded grotesque and harrowing realism that sugarcoats nothing and yet makes everything palpable.
