As the BBC Proms visits Gateshead, Dinis Sousa and the Royal Northern Sinfonia excel in Mendelssohn, although David Fray's Bach underwhelms. 

Music from different genres, for the big and small screens, sit side by side in an evening of music that ignites and enchants the imagination. 

Britten's profoundly pacifist work is given a calm reading by Peter Oundjian and the RSNO: soprano Erin Wall, the RSNO Junior Chorus and the wind players provide the high spots of the evening.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra brought their HD Odyssey to a packed Bridgewater Hall, giving an audiovisual feast of John Adams, Richard Strauss and Gustav Holst alongside impressive footage of the Earth and space.The format was quite straightforward, with films playing on a large screen above the stage whilst the orchestra worked their way through the rich sound palettes of the programme.

The bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth is inescapable, and it comes as no surprise that, however brief their offering, an institution as august as the Huddersfield Choral Society (HCS) could not allow the moment to pass without taking advantage of the opportunity to perform one of Wagner’s most impressive choral outbursts – “Wacht auf! Es nahet gen den Tag” (Awake! the dawn of day draws near) f

It’s been a busy couple of months for Berlioz’s Requiem in London. First there was Sir Colin Davis’s June performance at St. Paul’s, with the reinforced London Symphony Orchestra’s brass bands arrayed around the dome. Now, on an unofficial Big Choral Weekend at the Proms there was this valedictory effort from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and their outgoing music director, Thierry Fischer.
