Werk: Milonga del Angel

McFall’s Chamber brings a freshness to its repertoire as it revisits the Bongo Club years, and performs two newly commissioned pieces. Informal and very enjoyable.

A velvet-smooth bass-baritone voice, matinee idol looks and magnetic stage presence have made Erwin Schrott into one of opera’s big international stars. Last night, however, festivalgoers at Budapest’s Comedy Theatre saw him excel in a very different musical form: the Argentinian tango music whose leading composer was Astor Piazzolla.

Love may be a familiar feeling, but the passion Aurora Orchestra unleashed at LSO St Luke’s was enough to leave audiences wild with desire. Exploring the darkest undertones of love—anguish, jealousy, remorse and regret—Friday night’s programme, Jealous Guy, was woven together by tango music interspersed with tragic love stories from across musical history.
