Elgar, Szymanowski and Vaughan Williams may not be obvious concert companions, but with remarkable music-making these three sit beautifully together to make a special evening.

A dynamic and dreamy concoction from the London Philharmonic under Lawrence Renes, with impeccable performances from harp virtuoso Xavier de Maistre and LPO Principal Flute Juliette Bausor.

The RPO were on ripe form in works that still need such fine advocacy, and which deserved a much larger audience.

It was here in Manchester, only a stone’s throw from the modern Bridgewater Hall, where Hans Richter gave the first – and by all accounts, highly acclaimed – performance of Elgar’s First Symphony.
