A program that didn't look too exciting on paper was made special by an outstanding interpretation.

For his guest appearance with the Berlin Konzerthausorchester last weekend, Russell Davies was joined by violinist Chad Hoopes for performances of Glass and Adams alongside Bruckner’s First.

It is often interesting to hear performers one knows well in a different setting, and this concert was a case in point for me. The London Philharmonic Orchestra have performed often in Eastbourne since the 1930s and at the Congress Theatre for the past seventeen seasons, but this was my first visit to the venue. Based on this concert, I am hopeful that it will not be my last.

All three works in this programme were written by composers in mid-life - late 30s, early 40s - and all worked within the Austro-German tradition, but one would be surprised to find they had much else in common. The performances this evening did, however, manage to forge an unexpected congruence between them.Pintscher’s ‘orchestral study’ towards Osiris set the agenda.
