Newcastle International Chamber Music Series: London Haydn Quartet

The London Haydn Quartet performs on period instruments, exploring how this music might have sounded when it was first heard. We can’t wait to see them back in Sage Two again following their last visit in 2013.

Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue opens in a dark, tense mood, before building into music that is intricate and full of momentum. Haydn’s quartet is known particularly for its expressive second movement – solemn, lyrical, searching, and full of subtle detail. 

After his publisher judged it a bumpy ride for the audience and performers, Beethoven grudgingly changed the ending of his String Quartet in B flat to an easier one. Tonight you’ll hear its original Grosse Fugue ending. Intense, complex, unapologetically bold and still dividing opinion today.
