In the second half of the nineteenth century, while French composers were producing chamber works, opera remained nevertheless the country’s primary musical form. It was not only the most popular genre, but also the only one to receive institutional recognition. The diversity of genres, ranging from competition cantatas to grand opéra, and including short salon pieces and, of course, opéra-comique, fostered a wealth of ideas and a constantly evolving style of vocal composition. In this programme, a quartet of five-star soloists will demonstrate this richness by performing excerpts from works by Clémence de Grandval and her contemporaries.
