Vocal music gives the New Year’s Concert a festive character with two solo voices. Marina Viotti returns for a special reunion: the mezzo-soprano once appeared to great acclaim in the ensemble of the Luzerner Theater and is now internationally successful. The Kazakh bass Mark Kurmanbayev is an artist to discover, advancing his career with engagements in Geneva, Aix-en-Provence and Naples, among others.
The programme, full of evergreens, is also dressed up for the occasion. It combines opera and song with jazz, chanson and cabaret. The title “About Last Night” points to love affairs, confusions, encounters and the stories that continue to resonate after a long night.
Excerpts from “Carmen” and “Die Fledermaus”, Arthur Hamilton’s “Cry Me a River”, Erik Satie’s “Je te veux” and Mozart’s “Là ci darem la mano” tell of attraction, longing and seduction. Finally, the evening culminates in the Champagne Song and the Emperor Waltz by Johann Strauss – sparkling, elegant and full of New Year’s spirit.
On 2 January, the programme will be repeated in a family-friendly version shortened to around one hour.
