Hear how Bach looks to Italy and Mendelssohn to Scotland for inspiration. Bach studied composers like Vivaldi and Marcello, his concertos revealing a thorough grounding in Italian style with flowing melodies and technically dazzling solo parts. Mendelssohn’s overture and symphony were the result of an 1829 tour of Scotland. The Hebrides Overture’s glorious themes conjure visions of crashing waves on the Scottish islands, while the symphony’s four movements—played without pause—reflect the mood of the Scottish landscape as well as folk song, and soar with glorious melodies.
