Festival: Biennale Musica - International Festival of Contemporary Music

Biography

September 28th – October 7th, 2018

The Music sector was established in 1930. It is La Biennale's eldest sector, after Visual Arts. It organises one of the most long-standing festivals of contemporary music. Over the years it has featured history-making premieres, such as Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Luigi Nono's Prometeo, realised in collaboration with Renzo Piano and Emilio Vedova.

From 1937, and for 32 editions, the Festival took place annually, until 1972; after 1972, it continued with a less regular rhythm. In 1998, the Festival became annual again. Composers and musicians were appointed as directors of the Music Sector: Bruno Canino from 1999 until 2002; Uri Cane in 2003; Giorgio Battistelli from 2004 until 2007; Luca Francesconi from 2008 until 2011; Ivan Fedele from 2012 until the present day.

Over the years, La Biennale has complemented its Music Festival with “Biennale College”, an initiative which involves different Sectors (Dance, Music, Theatre, Film). Biennale College offers to young talented persons the opportunity of cooperating with art masters, for the realization of original creations. For the Music Sector, 3 or 4 short chamber music works are produced every year, selecting teams of composers and librettisti through an international call.
