Festival: Festival Bach Montreal

The Montreal Bach Festival is North America’s premiere destination for the timeless musical genius of Johann Sebastian Bach and the cultural legacy that he has inspired. The Montreal Bach Festival produces concerts of Johann Sebastian Bach’s own compositions as well as works by composers who have been influenced by him.

The Montreal Bach Festival launched its first edition in 2005 with guests such as the legendary Musica Antiqua Köln and artistic director Reinhard Goebel as well as Frieder Bernius and Klaus Mertens. Among the acclaimed musicians and conductors who have appeared at the Festival are Ton Koopman, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Kent Nagano, the official partner of the Festival, with whom Maestro Masaaki Suzuki mesmerized the audience with a performance of the Magnificat. A few highlights from past seasons are concert of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin , Red Bull Flying Bach, the break dancing event based on the Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as the performances of New York jazz pianist Uri Caine, the closing concert of our 2010 edition with the French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras who performed all of Bach's solo cello suites in one evening, as well as the violinist Isabelle Faust's programme of Bach's works for solo violin and the pianist Sergei Babayan with the Goldberg Variations. In 2012, Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe offered an exceptional rendering of all 6 Cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio.

In 2017, the festival was thrilled to welcome Bach's very own choir the Thomanerchor, Vox Luminis (Belgium), Collegium 1704 (Czech Republic) and Ensemble Jacques Moderne (France). We were delighted to have Ensemble Masques perform once again in the festival and to welcome Tamar Halperin and Julian Prégardien for their recital and Antje Weithass who performed all of the Sonatas and Partitas for violin.  Yo-Yo MA was our star at the sublime 10th anniversary Gala Concert and he will play the six Solo Cello Suites at the closing concert of the 2018 season – the only Canadian performance of his world tour ‘’The Bach Project’’.
