Oranjewoud Festival

Biography

May 29th  June 2nd, 2019

The Oranjewoud Festival is an annual multi-day classical music festival held at various indoor and outdoor locations within the historic Oranjewoud park. Its excellent quality is ensured by contributions made by nationally and internationally renowned musicians, inspiring programmes and exciting forms of presentation.

Since the first edition in 2012, we have been committed to making the Oranjewoud Festival an event that reduces the gap between fine classical music and the general public without making any concessions to the content of this music. We’re doing this by combining high quality with broad accessibility, form with content, and presentation with a very special experience. We cherish and defend valuable traditions while also replacing ingrained habits with new ideas.

The Oranjewoud Festival is an event attractive to classical music lovers, cultural adventurers and families with children.

The festival is located in Friesland and is also home to forests where royalty once lived: Oranjewoud (Orange woods). This royal forest is located to the east of the city Heerenveen and consists of various former country estates with long lanes, parks with fully mature oaks and beeches, a handful of country mansions, bodies of water, and small meadows tucked among the woods. Festivalhart ‘De Proeftuin’ (Garden of Delight) is situated in the Overtuin, a beautiful park across from a country mansion known as Huize Oranjewoud. All festival locations are within walking distance of each other.

The museum park is another attractive area of Oranjewoud. It was originally constructed in the Baroque style and includes the Museum Belvédère, a museum for modern art that relates to the Frisian landscape. Its low block-shaped building occupies such a modest place between sky, water and earth, that it fits perfectly into its royal surroundings.

Oranjewoud is accessible by car or train. If you take the train, special shuttles to the festival location are provided.
