The Concertgebouw and Daniele Gatti paint two very different pictures of Old Vienna: a maddeningly lifeless view of a Haydn symphony and a magical realisation of Mahler's shortest symphonic work.

A significantly smaller than usual audience was present for the SCO’s ‘Symphonic Opera’ concert, the finale of its St Andrews season. In the days leading up to thee concert, there was some disgruntlement from people about the programme – “Another Haydn symphony” was a common complaint, the Orchestra having put on several in St Andrews recently.

Pour une fois directement sous le feu des projecteurs, les musiciens de la Grande Boutique et leur directeur musical ont globalement brillé dans un programme varié allant de Haydn à Messiaen.

On attendait avec impatience le retour de Philippe Cassard dans le rôle-titre du Keuchel 482 de Mozart... Au pupitre, Sir Roger Norrington : figure socratique, la désinvolture du geste et la puissance du vrai, dans toute son intelligibilité.
