It is not often that a United Nations Messenger of Peace gives a concert in Sydney. Yet this is what happened on Sunday when violinist Midori Gotō played a recital with pianist Özgür Aydin. 

The Arnold Schoenberg Center is a gathering place for serious musicians, academics and informed concert goers, and has developed a considerable, steady following thanks to the consistently high level of its events

Violinist Alda Dizdari may just have taken a while to settle in to the performance, but the opening Debussy Sonata did not come across particularly well. Piano and violin didn’t quite lock in together and the Debussy ‘wash’ of sound, akin to an impressionist watercolour, was not apparent – the tone was harsh and rhythms angular.
