Romeo Castellucci’s inspiring and spiritual production lands in Berlin, with a superb cast of Baroque specialists and the B’Rock Orchestra under the baton of René Jacobs.

A dreary Katya Kabanova is rescued by great singing at the Staatsoper

Eva-Maria Westbroek (Katya) © Bernd Uhlig (2014)

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden revives Andrea Breth’s desolate production of Janáček’s masterpiece with a great cast led by conductor Thomas Guggeis.

Yuval Sharon’s pop Zauberflöte at the Staatsoper Berlin

Florian Teichtmeister (Papageno) © Monika Rittershaus (February 2019)

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden presents Avery Sharon’s shocking production of Mozart’s masterpiece, full of references to pop culture, side by side with the traditional one by Everding in the same season. A solid cast does justice to his fun, entertaining, bold production.

Barenboim conducts Otto Nicolai's Falstaff opera with a warmth and affection that is sorely lacking on stage.

Memorable singing in ambiguous Staatsoper Berlin Götterdämmerung

Irene Théorin and Andreas Schager lead a stunning musical performance, as Guy Cassiers vision of The Ring becomes clear.

Siegfried as chamber opera at Staatsoper Berlin

Siegfried © Monika Rittershaus (2012)
Daniel Barenboim conducts much of Siegfried as an intimate chamber opera, resulting in an unexpected musical joy, with an excellent cast of singers headed by Michael Volle’s Wanderer.

Michael Volle excels in a Walküre to remember in Berlin

Die Walküre © Monika Rittershaus (2011)
The Staatsoper Berlin celebrate the arrival of Michael Volle, a splendid Wotan, aided by a strong ensemble of singers and Daniel Barenboim's leadership.

A promising start to Staatsoper Berlin's Ring revival

Das Rheingold © Monika Rittershaus (2010)
Daniel Barenboim led a performance of deliberate tempo with a great ensemble of singers.  Guy Cassiers‘ production, while visually stunning at times, does little to enhance the performance.
